ONESTAR FOUNDATION ENCOURAGES TEXANS TO PARTICIPATE
IN NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE

September 1, 2009

AUSTIN –OneStar Foundation: Texas Center for Social Impact is encouraging all Texans to engage in a service project on September 11, 2009, as part of the conclusion of the United We Serve campaign and in honor of the first annual September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

In April, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and officially recognized September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. This September 11, Americans will collaboratively participate in volunteering and service projects across all fifty states to serve and strengthen their communities.

“This year, September 11 is both a time for reflection on the tragedy our nation endured eight years ago, and a chance to honor those lost by improving our communities, our neighbors’ lives and our own lives through service,” said Elizabeth Seale, President and CEO of OneStar Foundation. “I encourage all Texans to spend the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance making a positive difference in the world around them.”

Individuals looking for service opportunities on or around September 11 can search the Web site Serve.gov for projects planned in their ZIP Code, city or state. In addition, organizations wishing to reach out to volunteers can post their September 11 service projects on Serve.gov.

United We Serve is President Obama’s national call to service. The initiative began on June 22, 2009. While the initiative officially concludes on September 11, 2009, participants are encouraged to continue integrating volunteerism and service into their lives. The Corporation for National and Community Service leads United We Serve and manages Serve.gov.

OneStar Foundation equips our Texas communities to effectively address social challenges through a multifaceted strategy promoting social innovation, entrepreneurship, sound business practices, well-managed volunteer programs and rigorous research and evaluation. OneStar also serves as the state's National Service Commission administering the AmeriCorps grant program, and serves as the Faith-Based and Community Initiative office. OneStar carries out its mission for state government as a supporting nonprofit of the Office of the Governor.
