President & CEO, Retired
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Dwayne Howell retired in 2008 after a successful career of   nonprofit leadership and management.   His knowledge and accomplishments span many levels of professional experience.  He has counseled hundreds of local board members and staff on operational plans, budgets, programs, fundraising, governance and human resources development, and he has guided the corporate vision, strategic direction, resource and organizational development, and mission advancement of a leading national voluntary health agency. He served as President & CEO of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) from 1993 to early 2008, as well as a board member of Community Health Charities and the National Health Council, which he chaired in 2003.

He played a prominent role in guiding the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) through two recessions, and he steered the navigation of LLS through a recession and the aftermath of the traumatic events of September 11, 2001.  Under his leadership, both organizations made great progress in advancing their missions, and they led all other nationwide voluntary health agencies in fundraising market share growth.

Full Description

Nonprofit consultation and education often focus on strategies to accelerate program and resource growth in an environment that supports it. But how can you continue to achieve success in a down economy, when traditional sources of funding often decline and demand for programs often increases?

In this session Dwayne Howell will share his knowledge of strategies and tactics that can enable a nonprofit to navigate an economic downturn successfully. In group discussion and exercises, participants will explore effective and ineffective steps for continued organizational and mission progress at a time of financial retrenchment.   Participants will examine how management of people, programs and financial resources must all contribute to success in hard times.

Participants will:

  1. Identify barriers to organizational success in the current economic downturn.
  2. Explore approaches to managing people, program and financial performance that can help surmount the barriers.
  3. Identify and tailor approaches to short-term retrenchment and long-term growth, based on their assessments of the current situation and the strengths and gaps of their organizations.
